Ayurveda means knowledge of life. Everything in Ayurveda is validated by observation examination and knowledge derived from the ancient text. Ayurveda is a part of Veda. The etymological word Veda defines a knowledge system that can be used to characterize Ayurveda. The word Veda can be derived from four roots in Sanskrit. (a) Satta –meaning existence, (b) Jnana—meaning concept , (c) Vicara---meaning analysis and (d) Praapti—meaning attainment of experience. Veda is thus an experimental approach to knowledge building and is not speculative in nature. In this regard, it is in tune with the matter of science as we know it today. However, it differs from science in that it does not emphasize the experimental approach. The Vedic approach also relies on extra sensory modalities of cognition that can occur in altered steps of consciousness like meditation, which science looks at with great suspicion. The interaction between Ayurveda and scientific medicine has created three expression in the field of Ayurveda which are ------(a) Classical Ayurveda , ( b) Scientific Ayurveda and (c) Semi scientific Ayurveda.
Classical Ayurveda relies on diagnostic, the rapeutic and the pharmaceutical decisions are taken purely from within the epistemological framework of Ayurveda.
Semi scientific Ayurveda relies on parameter of scientific medicine to diagnose diseases and then attempts to apply Ayurvedic treatment with a Bio Chemical understanding of the Disease process.
Scientific Ayurveda is visible very much in the context of research than in practice. In this approach the Ayurveda becomes transmuted to scientific medicine at the levels of diagnostic, the rapeutic and pharmaceutical decision-making.
Therefore we can conclude by saying that Ayurveda is a science of life. It is fair to say that Ayurveda is a system that helps to maintain the health of the person by using inherent principle of nature to bring individual back into equilibrium with their true self.
Preservation of Ayurveda in the classical form will give to the world a different prospective on health care that can be integrated into a holistic health care delivery system. Indigenous medical knowledge represents a fertile field of acrendipitous discoveries and intuitive insights on which scientific advancement can glow and flourish.
We should not forget that plastic surgery owes its origin to the practice of rhinoplasty that was first performed in the Indian Sub -Continent by Susruta, the father of surgery, belonging to the Ayurvedic tradition. Modern drugs like RESERPINE AND COCANINE were discovered on the basis of leads and first clues obtained from indigenous medical practices.
Ayurveda takes the individual as whole and seeks to re-establish harmony between all the constituents in the body. Auyrveda gives the perfect balance meaning balance of mind, body and spirit to have a perfect health. The two objectives of Ayurveda are :-
(a) “Swasthyas swasthya rakshanam”-To prolong life and promote perfect health.
(b) “Aturasya vikar prashamanamcha”- To completely eradicate the disease and dysfunction of the body.
In Ayurveda, we view a person made up of five primary elements------ether, air, water, fire and earth, just as in nature. Ether and air combine to form what is known in Ayurveda as the “ Vata-Dosha” . Vata governs the principle of movement and directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration and elimination. Fire and water are the elements that combine to form the “Pitta Dosha”. The transformation of foods into nutrients that our bodies can assimilate is an example of Pitta function. The water and earth elements combine to form the “ Kapha Dosha” Kapha is what is responsible for growth , adding structure unit by unit. He whose doshas are in balance, appetite is good, all tisues of the body and all natural urges are functioning properly and whose body and spirit are cheerful , he is a healthy person.Ayurveda is health promotive- preventive-curative and nutritive.
Ayurveda gives us a model look to each individual an unique make up of the three doshas and to thereby designed fitment protocols that specifically address a persons health challenges.
