Introduction : Named for the ancient Egyptian capital on the Nile, Memphis is best known for the rise and fall of two men who led vastly different movements. Elvis Presley rocketed to fame here in the mid-1950s. And it was here on April 4, 1968, that the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated.

Memphis culture draws heavily on claiming responsibility for giving birth to the blues in the early 20th-century. Favourite son WC Handy composed the first published blues tune just before WWI, making Memphis, and the jumpin' Beale Street, the home of the blues.

Today, the dockside city retains a certain soulful grittiness from a history replete with cotton, riverboats and blues. Highlights include the famous Sun Studios, where Presley made his first recordings; Graceland, Presley's estate; and the glossy stretch of clubs and cafes on Beale St.

When To Go The best times to visit Memphis are the temperate seasons of spring and autumn; these are also the most scenic seasons. Spring is lush with fresh blooms and high rivers, and colorful autumn foliage covers upland woodlands in October. Many Memphis special events are held during these seasons, including the Beale St Music Festival (mid-May), the Spring Powwow (late May or early June) and the International Blues Talent Competition (October).       more information
